Blood emergency declared and citizens urged to donate

Northwest Homecoming Committee and Student Senate are bringing a blood drive to Northwest's campus.

Account Manager for Community Blood Center, Betty Tinker, says the blood drive begins today and runs through Thursday.

"This will be taking place in the Student Union building in the Tower View Room which is on the 3rd floor from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day."

Tinker says hospitals are in desperate need for blood.

"We did go on an emergency alert today.  What that means is that we are running super super low on blood.  It is very critical levels that we have on our shelves and we are in desperate need of blood donors."

Tinker adds that the community blood bank provides blood to hospitals in our area.

"We have to collect 580 units of blood every single day to cover all of our hospitals throughout northwest Missouri, northeast Kansas, and the major medical centers in Kansas City.  We do provide Maryville's local hospital as well."

Tinker asks that participants eat and drink plenty of fluids before coming in, as well as stay away from all caffeine before donating. All participants are required to provide photo ID, and they will all receive a shirt in thanks for taking part this week.
